What is Plum Island Light Station?
Plum Island Light Station is listed for Orient Point in Suffolk County, New York. It stands on the northwestern tip of Plum Island, looking out over Plum Gut. The first lighthouse here went up on the east shore of Plum Gut in 1827. The present one, from 1869, is a gable-roofed granite house with a cast iron tower built into it. A brick oil house from about 1900 and a wood-framed shed from about 1920 share the site. It was one of six lighthouses put up around Long Island Sound from 1867 to 1869 to a Third Light-House District standard design. Its bell sounded every 15 seconds. It stayed manned until it was deactivated in 1978. The old Fresnel lens and clockworks came out in 1994. Today they are shown in Greenport by the East End Seaport and Marine Foundation. An automated 190 mm lantern carries the active light. The Department of Homeland Security owns the inactive lighthouse.
