About this place
What is Orient Point Light Station?
This Suffolk County, New York lighthouse stands offshore near Long Island's northeast tip. The light sits 0.4 mile out from Orient Point, at the end of Oyster Pond Reef. Work on it started in 1898 and finished in 1899. It is a cast iron lighthouse of the "spark plug" type, named for its likeness to a gasoline engine spark plug. People nearby call it "the Coffee Pot." The only way to reach it is by boat. Resident keepers ran the light until it was automated in 1958. Its cast iron caisson cracked, and the tower's vertical alignment shifted. The U.S. Coast Guard decided to take the light out of service and tear the structure down. A public notice of that plan drew strong objections, and many locals saw the lighthouse as a landmark. The light was inactive from 1971 to 1974, and extensive repairs took place in 1973.
