What is WPA Field House?
The WPA Field House stands at 7-19 Henry Turner Bailey Road in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. It was built in 1938 and 1939 in the northern part of this coastal town. The small rectangular building measures 38 by 41 feet. Granite fieldstone forms its outer walls and porch pillars, and a big fieldstone chimney rises from the back roof slope. The nomination calls it a Craftsman-style building and a rare piece of historic recreational architecture in town. Its architect was M. Joseph Milano of Roslindale in Boston. The project drew $23,500 in WPA funds. Work ended in December 1939, though a plaque on the building gives 1937-1938. Its field house role lasted until about 1960. Later it hosted community band rehearsals, children's recreation programs, and group meetings. Four tennis courts once lined the front of the site, but a 124-car commuter lot has replaced them.
