What is Waterville Opera House and City Hall?
This opera house sits at the center of Waterville, a major industrial city in Maine. Work started in May 1896, after 63 citizens sent a petition to the Waterville mayor and aldermen. George G. Adams of Lawrence, Mass, received the commission as architect. A court fight with the architect over fees helped push completion back to early 1902. The main body is brick, trimmed in wood and stone. The ground and first stories hold the headquarters of the local city government. The opera house fills the remaining story and a half. Its balcony and proscenium arch carry elaborate Baroque plasterwork. The original painted curtain survives. Since 1960 the theatre has gone back to its original use.
