What is Washington Commercial Historic District?
This historic district is in Washington, in Daviess County, Indiana. Its edges are Meridian Street to the west, Hefron Street to the north, State Road 57 to the east, and the Chessie System Railroad to the south. The town began as Liverpool, laid out in 1815, and was replatted as Washington in 1817, when it was named the county government seat. Most of the buildings are brick, one to three stories tall. About a quarter of them are Italianate. A Neo-classical courthouse from 1928 sits at the north tip, and a Neo-classical City Hall dates from 1916. On Main Street, look for the Tudor Revival Peoples National Bank and the Mission Revival Indiana Theater at 411 E. Main. South Street has strong ties to the early days of the automobile. An Arts and Crafts B & O Depot anchors the southwest corner. The form counts 89 contributing buildings plus one contributing object, the War Memorial.
