About this place

What is Thompson--Ray House?

This Gas City, Indiana house sits at 407 East Main Street, two blocks east of the historic downtown. Work on it began in 1902 and ended in 1906. It follows the Free Classic form of the Late Victorian style. Architect Hiram Elder drew the design, and John H. Waldron did the building. The house rises two and a half stories over a full basement, with a cross-shaped plan and brick and stone walls. Its roof uses green glazed clay tiles made in Ohio, and its red bricks came from Gas City itself. John L. Thompson was president of the Thompson Bottle Company, the town's first industry in 1892. That plant later employed more than 700 workers. Thompson died in the house in 1922. Mayor Robert E. Ray lived here from 1958 until he died in 1964. In 1952 Ray seconded the nomination of Dwight Eisenhower for president. Inside, the large dining room keeps its quarter sawn oak paneling.
