What is Tekamah Carnegie Library?
The Tekamah Carnegie Library stands in Tekamah, Burt County, Nebraska, about 43 miles north-northwest of Omaha. It sits at an angle on its lot and faces the intersection. It is a rectangular brick building of one and a half stories in a vernacular Prairie style, with a hipped roof and decorative brackets under the eaves. The words "Carnegie Public Library" are carved in stone above the entrance. Windows come in sets of three, with a stone sill below and a stone belt course as the lintel. Committee members were told to have architect R. W. Grant of Beatrice inspect the site. L. G. Wood, a local contractor, won the contract at $7,500. The formal public opening came on 25 October 1916. By November it held about 1,200 volumes. A 1954 centennial history reported a circulation of one thousand per month. Its shelves then held over nine thousand volumes. Its original bookshelves remain in use.
