About this place

What is Stone's Trace?

Stone's Trace lies at a road junction about three miles south of Ligonier, in northeastern Indiana. Two trails first laid out by the Miami Indians met at this spot. It was a natural stopover, roughly midway between Fort Wayne and Elkhart. The key building is Stone's Tavern, an 1839 Federal style building and the oldest on the site. By the stairs, the plaster still carries the inscription Richard Stone, April, 1840. From 1840 to 1846, Stone was also the local postmaster. At one point the tavern became a barn with vertical siding. A second historic building, the brick Italianate Cyrus Kimmell House, probably dates from about 1875. Pharmacist Graydon Blue started the restoration, and volunteers did nearly all of it. It was dedicated on June 26, 1966. Modern buildings on the site house a yearly crafts festival. The first festival was held in 1974, and it now draws up to 20,000 visitors.
