What is Stetson, John B., House?

This house at 1031 Camphor Lane in DeLand was built about 1886 as a winter home for John B. Stetson. He was a famous hat manufacturer from Philadelphia. His name is tied to Stetson University, which is also in DeLand. The school took the Stetson name in 1889 because of his financial aid. The architect George T. Pearson designed the house. The L-shaped building has three stories under a hipped roof with a low pitch. Wood shingles cover all of the walls in several designs, such as rectangular, semicircular, and imbricated. A circular tower with a conical roof sits on the southwest corner. The south side has a blind ogee arcade on the first floor. Some windows have leaded and stained glass. The grounds, known as "Gillen," once covered 300 acres, but less than 3 acres remain. Stetson built an alligator pit to entertain friends who visited from Philadelphia.
