About this place
What is Steinbeck, John, House?
This one story house in Monte Sereno sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills. The land was annexed into the City of Monte Sereno in 1956. The original part of the house was built in 1936 for John Steinbeck and measures 40 by 35 feet. Its living room has a vaulted ceiling, a fireplace with a copper hood, and built-in bookcases. A guest house from the fall of 1936 sits about 25 feet to the southeast. Steinbeck himself built the 8 foot grapestake fence and carved the "Arroyo del Ajo" sign on the gate. The house is listed under Criterion B for its ties to Literature. Here he completed Of Mice and Men, published in March 1937. He wrote The Grapes of Wrath by hand from May through October 1938, averaging 2,000 words a day. That novel won the Pulitzer prize. The owners have not let anyone intrude on the workroom where he wrote it. The home has stayed in use as a private residence.
