What is St. Paul's Episcopal Church?
St. Paul's Episcopal Church sits on the north side of Oak Avenue in Magnolia Springs. Work on the church started in 1901, and Bishop Robert W. Barnwell consecrated it in 1902. This frame building of one story has a steep front gable roof and a three-story tower to the side. The tower has a pyramidal roof and a corner entrance cut on the diagonal at its base. The building rests on brick piers. The sanctuary is one open room with a cathedral ceiling, varnished beaded board, and the original pews and altar. A cross of cured magnolia leaves was set over the altar in 1902 and is still there. The 1916 hurricane blew the church off its foundations, but it survived. For nearly fifty years it was the only church in town. A one-story office was added at the rear in 1982. Baldwin County has three frame religious buildings in the vernacular Gothic Revival style; this is one.
