About this place
What is St. Paul Municipal Grain Terminal?
The St. Paul Municipal Grain Terminal stands at 266 Old Shepard Road in St. Paul. Plans for the complex were done in 1927 and revised in 1929. Construction ended in 1931. George M. Shepard and John W. Kelsey were the city engineers. The headhouse is a transfer elevator, whose sole job was moving bulk grain between points. It rises about 125 feet from the first floor to its coping. All of its original equipment is still in place. The single-story sack house measures 43 by 129 feet. About half of the complex reaches out over the river, forming a barge dock along the south facade. The terminal was the first concrete elevator on the upper Mississippi River built to load grain into barges. In 1938, 121 cooperatives formed the Grain Terminal Association. That year the headhouse sent more than 17 million bushels of grain into barges.
