About this place
What is Spring Creek Friends Cemetery?
Spring Creek Friends Cemetery covers about half an acre of rural land near Oskaloosa in Mahaska County, Iowa. It was first set up around 1848 and took burials until about 1892. About 123 burials have plain markers, and most markers are limestone. Of these, 77 are small rectangular slabs with flat tops. Seven are pillar markers on stepped bases from the late 1870s and 1880s, mostly for the Critchett family. A marker for George E. Chamberlain shows Masonic symbols. The plain stones point to the Quaker preference for simplicity. In 1863 the site hosted the first Iowa Yearly Meeting. Fire destroyed the meeting house and its addition in 1878. In 1894 the Spring Creek group joined Center Grove to form the Oskaloosa meeting. The main entrance sits on the west side near the southwest corner, between poured concrete posts. Burials have ended, and Spring Creek Township maintains the grounds.
