About this place
What is Smith's Building?
Smith's Building is on Worthington Street in downtown Springfield. It is a five story brick building with a second floor mezzanine. Piers with segmental arches divide the upper floors, and a corbeled cornice and pierced parapet finish the design. Cast iron piers split the storefronts into three bays with early leaded transoms. The first occupant was the Mcintosh Company, a large and old regional shoejobbing house, which came from the Carlton House Block in 1897 and left in 1913. Fred Smith moved his billiard parlor and bowling alleys here. He had acquired pool and billiard tables from the 1905 St. Louis Exposition. The third and fourth floors each held seven lanes, and the fifth held eight. In the early 1960s the lanes were removed, reworked, and moved to a modern Connecticut bowling alley. The billiard parlor still operates and has at least seven of its 1905 Exposition tables.
