About this place
What is Senator Theatre?
The Senator Theatre is an Art Deco movie theater at 5904-5906 York Road in northern Baltimore, Maryland. It was built in 1939 to serve a suburban neighborhood and later became a first run theater. Local architect John J. Zink designed it, and Durkee Enterprises, among Baltimore's largest and oldest movie circuits, ran it. A circular lobby of stucco and glass block stands in front of the brick auditorium. In the upper lobby, the glass block forms stepped pyramids lit from behind by colored neon. No other Baltimore structure uses glass block for decoration as extensively as its rounded front facade. The lobby has a terrazzo floor, mural paintings, and geometric trim and panels. The auditorium has no balcony and seats 929. Few undivided movie auditoriums from before World War II still exist in Baltimore, and this is one of them. A brick cleaners shop was added on the north side in 1962.
