About this place

What is Scottish Rite Temple?

The Scottish Rite Temple sits in Wichita, on the northwest corner where First and Topeka streets meet. The building went up for the Young Men's Christian Association in 1887-1888. In January 1898 the Y. M. C. A. sold it to the Scottish Rite Masonic bodies. Its walls use native limestone set in a random ashlar pattern. A semicircular tower marks the southeast corner. Originally the tower ended in a tall conical roof that rose two more stories. The tower roof now sits concealed behind a circular parapet. On the south side, the entrance sits inside a massive Egyptian style archway, decoratively built of stone. In 1907 the cornerstone was laid for a dining room and an auditorium built to the north. The form calls the temple an excellent example of architecture adapted to native Kansas stone.
