About this place

What is Sanford Grammar School?

Sanford Grammar School stands at 7th and Myrtle in Sanford, in Seminole County, Florida. From 1902 to 1911, people knew the school as Sanford High School. Wilbur Talley, an architect from Jacksonville, designed the main building. A massive bell tower rises three stories, with an open belfry that shows Romanesque arches. The cornerstone was laid on April 19, 1902. In 1916, Sanford architect Elton Houghton designed one-story wings to the east and west of the main building, and these wings blend in harmony with it. A one-story wood frame building came to the property in 1921. The school overlooks a large park that the city founder, General Henry Shelton Sanford, donated. The nomination links the school to history, and it names desegregation in particular.
