What is Old First Reformed Church?

Old First Reformed Church stands at 729 Carroll Street in Brooklyn, where Carroll meets Seventh Avenue. Brooklyn architect George L. Morse designed it in the late Gothic Revival style, and it went up in 1889-91. It is built of Salem, Indiana limestone over a granite base. A stone tower and spire 212 feet tall rises at the southeast corner. When new, it was one of just three stone spires of its kind in Brooklyn. The sanctuary holds nine lancet windows and three rose windows. Several firms made the memorial stained glass, among them the Tiffany Glass Company and Heuser and Hausleiter. A Virgilio Tojetti mural titled "The Empty Tomb" sits high above the reredos. The chapel was started in 1887 and finished in 1889. The church is the fifth building for the First Reformed Church of Brooklyn, whose first was put up in 1666.
