What is Main Street Historic District?

This district sits in Millville, a town in southern Worcester County, Massachusetts, on the Rhode Island line. It spans roughly 85 acres and counts 148 contributing and 28 noncontributing properties. Homes make up most of it, yet it also holds commercial buildings, a church, landscape features, and industrial sites of archeological interest. The brick Moses Buffum House at 214 Main Street is in the Federal style. In 1877 the Woonsocket Rubber Company bought the local water privilege to make felt linings for boots. That firm merged with eight other domestic rubber makers to create U.S. Rubber. U.S. Rubber closed the Millville plant in 1929, a heavy blow to the community. Fires in 1976 and 1978 wiped out both the Lawrence Felting and Woonsocket Rubber mills, and a vacant lot remains.
