About this place
What is Havana Public Library?
Havana Public Library sits at the northwest corner of Plum and Adams Streets in Mason County, Illinois, one block south of downtown Havana. The library opened to the public on June 27, 1898, in a room of the city hall building. The Baptist church voted to sell the front half of its lot to the library board for $1,500. An $8,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie went toward construction. Designs by architect C.E. Hair of Galesburg were approved, and the library was completed in November 1902. The building is made of blond-colored brick laid in common bond. In 1937 an addition was built on the rear, or west facade. A $65,000 endowment from Horace G. Parkins, a former Havana resident, funded that work. That year the entrance moved from the east side on Plum Street to the south side on Adams Street. The original stone door pediment with the inscription "1901" was retained.
